League of Legends - Heimerdinger Guide

Heimerdinger is one of the best pushing caster champions in League of Legends. His ability to farm heavily with his turrets, combined with his powerful abilities makes him a valuable asset to any team. Heimerdinger is also a capable solo champion and an extremely strong lane partner.

This Heimerdinger guide aims to be a basic and simple introduction on basic strategy that should be adopted when playing Heimerdinger, it is recommended for people just starting to use Heimerdinger.

  • Heimerdinger Passive Techmaturgical Repair Bots (Passive) Heimerdinger's passive gives a small boost to HP regeneration in the laning phase and helps your turrets to regenerate between minion waves. It also works on towers, but the regeneration is hardly noticeable.

  • Heimerdinger turrets H-28G Evolution Turret Heimerdinger's defining ability, these allow you to farm massively early game and are your main protection. Always be sure to have the maximum number of turrets up. Turrets should be placed right next to each other or separated depending on the champions you are versing.

  • Heimerdinger rockets Hextech Micro-Rockets Relatively weak early game, but provide a nice kick mid-late game and are very handy with their automatic targeting. The rockets will attack the 3 closest enemies so learn to position yourself to achieve the desired outcome.

  • Heimerdinger grenade CH-1 Concussion Grenade Heimerdinger's strong offensive ability, which also comes with a blind and a stun for direct hits. They have a relatively slow travel time (unless your ultimate is on) but have a massive range and area of effect. End game these grenades can destroy squishy champions and have the potential to shut out AD champions with the blind effect.

  • Heimerdinger ultimate UPGRADE!!! (Ultimate) Heimerdinger's ultimate has both a passive and active ability, the passive allows you to easily reach maximum cooldown of 40%. The active aspect buffs all of Heimerdinger's abilities, the best boost is that his turrets gain a slowing effect from the active which makes it a great way to stop oncoming attackers as well as catch people in the middle of both your turrets. The active also provides Heimerdinger with more rockets and a faster travelling grenade. Heimerdinger's ultimate has a fairly low cooldown so feel free to use it as required (every major fight).

Ability Order

Generally the best way to level your abilities is: Ult > Turret > Rocket > Grenade

Turrets are a great asset to you early-game and this skill should be increased to level 3 as soon as possible (this allows you to have two turrets). From here you should max Rockets to increase the amount of harassment you can deal to enemies. One point in grenade is important early for the blind and stun effect that it offers, this allows you to do blue golem buff and dragon early as well as take on AD champions (provided you have good aim!)

Rune Options For Heimerdinger

Red (Marks) - Magic Penetration
Yellow (Seals) - Mana Regeneration Per Level
Blue (Glyphs) - Cooldown Reduction
Purple (Quintessences) - Health

This rune build is your standard caster setup. It offers magic penetration Marks to deal more damage, mana regeneration Seals to maintain your mana levels and cooldown reduction Glyphs to allow you to harass more and finally health on Quintessences to boost your early game survivability.

Summoner Spells

Best Summoner Spells:

Flash and Ghost allow you to escape easily as Heimerdinger as he lacks any escaping skills and can be killed very quickly without the protection of his turrets.

Other Good Summoner Spells:

Teleport is another strong summoner choice as it gives your team great map control and allows you to easily push lanes, which Heimerdinger excels at.

Heimerdinger follows your standard mage/caster mastery setup with a 9/0/21 build.

This focuses on getting spell penetration in offense and maximising mana regeneration, neutral buff duration, improved summoner spells and cooldowns in utility.

General Heimerdinger Gameplay Tips

Below are some general tips and guidelines that will help improve your Heimerdinger gameplay:
  • Always have turrets up when possible, you are relatively defenseless without them.
  • Concentrate on staying at the back of team fights and using your rockets and grenades to poke the enemy.
  • Placing turrets in bushes and using your ultimate as a champion walks through combined with your grenade and rocket can lead to a very easy kill.
  • The timing of your ultimate is vital, too early and your enemies will back away.
  • Get good at hitting your grenades, for melee champions let them come close to you, allowing an easy grenade hit and stun.
  • Be careful about running off alone especially when your summoner spells and ultimate are on cooldown.
  • Always be aware of how many turrets you have stored up.

Early Game - (Level 1-6)

  • Run to your lane as soon as possible and place a turret in it. By the time minions spawn this mana will regenerate.
  • As with any other champion, concentrate on last hitting minions, while keeping your maximum number of turrets up (1 or 2). You don't want these near enemy minions though as it will push the lane too hard. You simply want them there as protection.
  • As Heimerdinger you will be a constant target of ganks as you are very hard to lane against, don't forget to buy wards or use your turrets as wards.

Mid Game - (Level 7-12)

  • Dragon should also be a key goal for you at this point of the game. Take it down when your lanes or allies aren't under much threat (see champion spotlight on the easiest way to solo dragon).
  • You should also be able to one hit the wraith and wolf camp with your grenade & rocket by now. The wraith camp can be killed from mid-lane, so it never hurts to pick up some extra gold.
  • Concentrate on pushing lanes with your team, your mere presence (along with your turrets) will be able to push any lane.

Late Game - (Level 13-18)

  • This is the time where your grenade and rockets become your main attacks. A well placed grenade will stun enemy champions and usually result in a kill.
  • You should be activating your ultimate every team fight for the extra rockets and slow from your turrets.
  • Your turrets can be easily destroyed at this stage of the game, use them as scouting tools or during team fights for the slow they provide.
