League of Legends - Poppy Guide

Posted by Jindooo on Dienstag, November 01, 2011

Poppy is one of the best anti-carries in League of Legends and as such packs some incredible single target nuke damage and abilities that allow her to run past the front line tanks and kill that squishy Ashe.

This Poppy guide aims to be a basic and simple introduction on basic strategy that should be adopted when playing Poppy, it is recommended for people just starting to use Poppy.

Abilities

  • Poppy Valiant Fighter (Passive) Poppy's passive helps her be the amazing anti-carry she is and also allows her to take some extra punishment when it matters.

  • Poppy Devastating Blow This skill adds a strong damage bonus to Poppy's attack and is on a relatively low cooldown, you should activate this whenever it is available during a fight.

  • Poppy Paragon of Demacia Nobody gets away from Poppy when you activate this skill, it allows Poppy to chase down enemies and get away after taking out the enemies carry, it also boosts her defense and attack instantly or slowly over-time.

  • Poppy Heroic Charge This is Poppy's signature move and allows her to devastate on Twisted Treeline due to the large number of walls, increasing the chance that she can land a stun and bonus damage.

  • Poppy Diplomatic Immunity (Ultimate) Poppy's ultimate allows her to ignore everybody and target a single target. It also provides a hefty damage boost against that target, allowing Poppy to get in and out quickly as required.

Ability Order

As Poppy you should level your abilities as follows:
Ultimate > Devastating Blow > Heroic Charge > Paragon of Demacia

Devastating Blow is your main damage dealer and has an extremely low cooldown and is maxed first. We grab a point in Paragon of Demacia at level 4 for the speed boost it provides in chasing enemies. Second you want to max out Heroic Charge which gives you greater nuke damage (especially on Twisted Treeline).

Runes

poppy_runes
Red (Marks) - Magic Penetration
Yellow (Seals) - Armor // Mana Regeneration
Blue (Glyphs) - Cooldown Reduction // Magic Resistance
Purple (Quintessences) - Flat Health // Movement Speed

Poppy deals mostly magic damage so magic penetration is a must have on Marks. Running either armor on Seals for a defensive choice or Mana Regeneration if you have trouble managing your mana levels. Glyphs can either be run as cooldown reduction or magic resistance based on your preference. While Quintessences can be health or movement speed.

Summoner Spells

Best Summoner Spells:
-Flash
-Ignite

Flash combined with Paragon of Demacia ensures nobody can escape Poppy, it also helps setup Heroic Charge into walls. Ignite is a good edition to Poppy's nuke combo and is incredible at increasing Poppy's overall damage. helping to get you those kills that you would otherwise just miss out on.

Other Good Summoner Spells:
-Ghost
-Exhaust

Ghost can be used instead of Flash if it suits your playstyle better. Exhaust also aids her in shutting down the enemy carry, espeically if they are a physical carry and also helps her catch up to enemies.

Masteries

Poppy wants to run a 9/0/21 setup.

The offensive tree offers ability power, cooldown reduction and the very powerful spell penetration. Don't forget to grab improved exhaust if you take it as summoner spell.

The utility tree offers many powerful stats to Poppy, it gives reduced death timers, improved experience, mana regeneration, gold generation, increased movement speed and improved summoner spell cooldown.

Item Build

Final Item Build:
-Mercury's Treads
-Deathfire Grasp
-Lich Bane
-Abyssal
-Rylai's Crystal Scepter
-Rabadon's Deathcap

Steps/Reasoning:
-Start off with a Regrowth Pendant and a Health Potion, this will help you recover from any harrassment and builds into a Philosopher's Stone an important early game item for Poppy.
-Next is either Sorcerer Boots or Mercury's Treads for crowd control heavy teams.
-Your next core item is a Sheen which will be built into a Lich Bane after you build a Deathfire Grasp. This has all your core items covered, Don't Forget Deathfire Grasp (and ignite) are effected by your ultimate, making them hurt ALOT. Lich Bane allows your auto attack between Devastating Blow to hit very hard as well.
-Your next 3 items will depend on the situation, if you need more magic resistance build yourself an Abyssal Scepter, this item is amazing as it also makes you stronger at the same time. Your other possible item choice is Rylai's Crystal Scepter you want to build this if the game is going very well and you want a slow, ability power and some extra health. If you want raw damage grab a Rabadon's Deathcap.

Alternatives:
-Banshee's Veil (A great stun counter.)
-Guardian Angel (Allows you to play more aggressively.)
-Hextech Gunblade (Boost your sustainability.)
-Zhonya's Hourglass (A good ability power boost and strong active.)

General Poppy Tips

  • Your goal is always to take out the enemies carry and support champions.
  • Sometimes as Poppy it may be worth dying if you can take out the enemies carry with you, the team fight will now be 4v4 but they will be down their main damage dealer.
  • Sometimes you will want to use your ultimate on your target for the damage boost and sometimes you will want to use it on the tank or somebody running away to give you free run on the rest of their team-mates.
  • Poppy is one of the worst farmers in the game, don't try to push lanes it takes too long. Instead use ganks to gain gold.

Level 1-6 (Early)

  • Poppy is nothing great early, do your best to grab last hits and slam the enemy into the sidewall if they over extend.
  • At around lvl 3-4 you can start using your combo on the squishy enemy champion in your lane.
  • Communicate with your laning partner as to who you are targeting with Heroic Charge, to ensure maximum damage is dealt to them while they are pinned.

Level 7-12 (Mid)

  • You have very strong nuke damage and tower diving abilities now.
  • If you choose to tower dive save your ultimate until the last second before you attack the enemy champion, this will give you maximum killing time.
  • You should start shutting down the enemies carry, pick on them every team fight and stalk their jungle to catch them getting neutral buffs. If they go to a side line to farm, go harass them.
  • You should roam both jungles and ward them appropriately, Poppy is very devastating in the jungle.

Level 13-18 (Late)

  • Continue to roam the jungle and protect your own buffs, while scouting out the enemies.
  • Every team fight you want to try and flank the enemy, aiming straight for their carry.
  • Preferably you want to use your ultimate on the enemy carry for the damage boost. However, if they are extremely fed and can kill you or they have a stun/slow that may prevent you killing them (Ashe) you want to use your ultimate on someone else (that lacks any form of crowd control to stop you).
  • At this stage you can kill most carries with your full combo, including Deathfire Grasp and Ignite.
  • Your Heroic Charge is great at slamming the enemy backwards towards your team. You can also use Charge to protect your team-mates.
